**Transport for NSW advises an area of 450,000 Hectares relies upon the river crossing at Scabbing Flat Bridge. We can’t imagine how big this area is… but we know it is an area that grows A LOT OF FOOD! So instead of a lesson in geography - we thought we would see if people can guess the number of sausages that come from the region Transport for NSW knows is impacted by this single-lane bridge.

450,000 Hectares of farmland (East of Dubbo) is impacted by a heritage listing on the Scabbing Flat Bridge, Geurie.

Why? Business, truck drivers, logistics companies, food producers are being forced to use a single lane bridge, with weight restrictions.

The detours, delays since repairs started in December 2023 have cost our region dearly.

Increased costs* mean the cost of getting food from the farm to the supermarket is more expensive than it should be.

We understand the NSW Govt is keen to invest in the future and reduce the cost of living.

the cost of an old bridge

In late 2023, a 16-tonne load limit was imposed after an inspection identified significant deterioration of the timber structure. The full 42.5-tonne limit was not reinstated until October 2025, approximately two years during which heavy vehicles were diverted via two main detours:

●       Via Wellington: an additional 64.8 kilometres and 50 minutes on each affected trip

●       Via Dubbo: an additional 70.9 kilometres and 60 minutes on each affected trip

For a tractor moving farming plant and equipment, the detour added a further two hours to each trip.

See below the maps showing the detail supporting the above distance and times is included in this document.

What the detours cost

Every diverted trip carried a direct cost. As the table above shows, each time a Hilux ute, a single semi-trailer livestock truck or a tractor was forced onto a detour, the impact was significant in terms of diesel consumed.
