WHY ARE WE RUNNING THIS COMPETITION?

450,000 Hectares of farmland (East of Dubbo) is impacted by a heritage listing on the Scabbing Flat Bridge, Geurie.

Why? Business, truck drivers, logistics companies, food producers are being forced to use a single lane bridge, with weight restrictions.

The detours, delays since repairs started in December 2023 have cost our region dearly.

Increased costs* mean the cost of getting food from the farm to the supermarket is more expensive than it should be.

We understand the NSW Govt is keen to invest in the future + reduce the cost of living.

Scabbing Flat Bridge is not fit-for purpose. It is not suitable. The heritage layer must be removed.

The bridge MUST be removed from the TfNSW Timber Truss Bridge Strategy.

Our community and all that benefit from the food grown in the 450,000 HA area that use the bridge - deserve a new bridge.

To let TfNSW know you want the heritage layer removed, please head to their website and “Have Your Say”. Complete a survey, lodge a pin on their map or lodge a submission.

The cost of an old bridge …

Let us show you the price are we ALL paying for the detours + delays as faceless people from Sydney decide keeping an old bridge is more important than safety + farmers supplying affordable food staples

A table displaying vehicle types, detour distances, extra diesel, extra time, fuel cost, time cost, carbon emissions, and total trip cost for different routes.

In late 2023, a 16-tonne load limit was imposed after an inspection identified significant deterioration of the timber structure. The full 42.5-tonne limit was not reinstated until October 2025. For two years during heavy vehicles were diverted via two main detours:

Via Wellington: an additional 64.8 kilometres and 50 minutes on each affected trip

Via Dubbo: an additional 70.9 kilometres and 60 minutes on each affected trip

For a tractor moving farming plant and equipment, the detour added a further two hours to each trip.

See below the maps showing the detail supporting the above distance and times is included in this document.

What did these detours cost us?

Every diverted trip carried a direct cost.

As the table above shows, each time a Hilux ute, a single semi-trailer livestock truck or a tractor was forced onto a detour, the impact was significant in terms of diesel consumed, time wasted, and emissions produced. For truck drivers, it meant reduced work, due to requirements to comply with fatigue laws. For livestock, it meant more time off water.
